What is Moissanite?

Moissanite is a popular diamond alternative that is becoming increasingly popular in the jewelry industry due to its brilliance, durability, and affordability. It has a similar appearance to a diamond, but is made of a different material and has different optical properties. Moissanites have a higher refractive index than diamonds, which means they reflect more light and have more sparkle.

Moissanite is also more durable than a diamond and is second only to a diamond in terms of hardness on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. This means that it is resistant to scratches and chips, making it a popular choice for engagement rings and other fine jewellery.

Moissanite can be created in a laboratory or can be found in nature, although natural moissanite is extremely rare. Lab-created moissanite is widely available and is typically less expensive than diamonds, making it a popular alternative for those looking for a high-quality, affordable gemstone.

Moissanite vs Diamond

Moissanite and diamonds are both popular gemstones used in jewellery, but they have some differences in their physical properties, price, and ethical considerations. Here are some key points to consider when comparing moissanite vs diamonds:

1. Physical properties: Moissanite is a lab-created gemstone that has a similar appearance to a diamond, but is composed of silicon carbide rather than carbon. It is slightly less hard than a diamond, but still very durable and suitable for everyday wear. Moissanite has a higher refractive index than a diamond, which means it can be more sparkly and have more fire (color flashes) than a diamond.

2. Price: Moissanite is generally much less expensive than a diamond of the same size and quality. This is because moissanite is lab-created, while diamonds are mined from the earth and can be rare and difficult to find. The price difference can be significant, with a 1-carat moissanite costing a fraction of the price of a 1-carat diamond.

3. Ethics: Some people prefer moissanite over diamonds because it is a lab-created gemstone, which means it does not contribute to the environmental or ethical issues associated with diamond mining. Diamond mining can have negative impacts on the environment and local communities, and there are concerns about labor rights violations and funding of conflict in some diamond-producing regions.

Overall, the choice between moissanite and diamonds comes down to personal preference and budget. While diamonds are more traditional and have a higher perceived value, moissanite can be a great alternative for those who want a beautiful and sparkly gemstone without breaking the bank or supporting diamond mining.

Moissanite vs Lab Diamonds

  1. Composition: Moissanite is composed of silicon carbide (SiC), while lab diamonds have the same chemical composition as natural diamonds, which is carbon (C).
  2. Hardness: Moissanite is a very hard gemstone, ranking 9.25 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Lab diamonds, being chemically identical to natural diamonds, have a hardness of 10, making them the hardest substance. Lab diamonds are very slightly more durable and scratch-resistant than moissanite.
  3. Brilliance and Fire: Both moissanite and lab diamonds are known for their exceptional brilliance and sparkle. However, moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamonds, resulting in greater fire, which refers to the dispersion of light into rainbow colours. Some people prefer the fiery appearance of moissanite, while others appreciate the more subtle brilliance of diamonds.
  4. Price: Moissanite is generally more affordable than lab diamonds. While the cost of both can vary based on size, cut, and quality, moissanite tends to be significantly less expensive per carat compared to lab diamonds.
  5. Rarity: Lab diamonds, although created in a laboratory, have the same crystal structure and physical properties as natural diamonds. They are considered rare and valuable. Moissanite is a relatively abundant gemstone and is produced specifically for use as an alternative to diamonds helping to keep the price affordable for customers who want the look of a diamond but don't want to compromise on quality.
  6. Origin: Lab diamonds are grown in a laboratory through a process that replicates the natural conditions in which diamonds form. Moissanite, on the other hand, occurs naturally in small quantities but is also synthesized in laboratories to meet the demand for gem-quality moissanite as a diamond alternative for jewellery.

Is Sterling Silver Good for Jewellery

Sterling silver jewellery can come in a variety of forms, including earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, and more. It can be made in a variety of styles, from simple and classic to bold and statement-making. Sterling silver jewellery is also a great option for those with sensitive skin, as it is hypoallergenic and doesn't contain nickel, which can cause allergic reactions in some people.

To care for sterling silver jewellery, it is important to keep it clean and dry. Silver can tarnish over time due to exposure to air and moisture, but it can easily be polished with a soft cloth or silver polishing cloth to restore its shine. It is also important to store sterling silver jewelry in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight or heat, to prevent tarnishing.

When shopping for sterling silver jewelry, it's important to look for pieces that are made of high-quality materials and are well-crafted. Sterling silver should be marked with a stamp that says "925" or "sterling" to indicate its purity. It's also important to choose a reputable seller who offers high-quality, ethically sourced materials. Shop online with Holloway Jewellery for your next piece of sterling silver jewellery to add to your jewellery collection.

Mens Moissanite Rings

Men's moissanite rings are a popular choice for those seeking a stylish and durable alternative to traditional mens diamond rings. Moissanite is a lab-created gemstone that closely resembles the brilliance and fire of diamonds while offering several distinct advantages. Here's some information about men's moissanite rings:

Moissanite Properties: Moissanite is a type of silicon carbide crystal that was first discovered in a meteorite. It has exceptional hardness, scoring 9.25 on the Mohs scale, making it one of the hardest gemstones available. Moissanite also has excellent optical properties, including high refractive index and dispersion, resulting in impressive sparkle and brilliance.

Visual Appearance: Men's moissanite rings come in a variety of cuts and designs. Whether you prefer a classic round cut, a sleek emerald cut, or a modern cushion cut, there are options to suit every style. Moissanite's brilliance and fire make it an eye-catching choice for a mens ring, and its white colour is nearly colourless, further enhancing its beauty.

Durability: Moissanite is highly durable and suitable for everyday wear. Its hardness makes it resistant to scratches, chips, and abrasions, ensuring that your mens moissanite ring will maintain its brilliance and shine for years to come. This durability makes moissanite an excellent choice for men's rings, which may be subjected to more rugged activities.

Affordability: One of the significant advantages of mens moissanite rings is their affordability compared to traditional mens diamond rings. Moissanite offers a similar visual appeal to diamonds at a fraction of the cost, making it an attractive option for those seeking a high-quality ring within their budget.

Ethical and Sustainable: Moissanite is a lab-created gemstone, meaning it is not mined from the earth. This makes it a more ethical and sustainable choice compared to natural diamonds, which often involve environmental and ethical concerns. Choosing a mens moissanite ring allows you to enjoy a stunning gemstone while supporting environmentally conscious practices.

Choice: There are many Men's moissanite rings available to suit your preferences. You can choose the metal type, such as white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or sterling silver, and the shape of the main stone as well as selecting additional features like side stones or details on the metal band to make your ring truly match your style.

Men's moissanite rings are a stunning and affordable choice for those looking for a durable, ethical, and visually appealing alternative to traditional diamond rings.
